Romax Test & Tag is your trusted local partner for workplace safety and compliance. Based in the Blue Mountains, we specialise in testing and tagging all electrical appliances to ensure your business meets legal requirements, keeps your staff safe, and avoids costly penalties.
With over 10 years of electrical experience, we understand the importance of affordable, professional service delivered on time.
Test & Tagâ is the process of inspecting and electrically testing all portable appliances in your workplace to ensure they are safe to use.
It involves two key steps:
1. Testing â Using a calibrated Portable Appliance Tester (PAT), each item is thoroughly checked for:
Earth continuity â making sure the appliance is properly earthed and safe to use
Insulation resistance â ensuring wires and components are protected from leakage currents
Polarity â confirming power is flowing the correct way through the appliance
2. Tagging â Each tested item is then labelled with a durable tag showing: the date of the test, the next test due date, the results (pass or fail) and the technician's details.
This process not only ensures compliance with Australian Standards, but it also provides a visible record that staff and inspectors can see at a glance.
Why It Matters
For your staff: They know the equipment theyâre using is safe, reducing the risk of shock or injury.
For your business: You have documented proof of compliance, protecting you in the event of inspections, audits, or insurance claims.
For your peace of mind: You can focus on running your business knowing every plug, cord, and appliance has been checked by a professional.

Whether youâre a new business owner opening your first hair salon, medical clinic, or massage studio â or an established operator with staff and multiple sites â you are legally required under NSW Workplace Health & Safety laws to ensure your electrical equipment is regularly tested and tagged in line with AS/NZS 3760:2010 standards.
This isnât optional. Itâs law. And the consequences of ignoring it can be devastating.

If an accident happens â an electrical fire, a customer injury, or worse, a staff electrocution â the very first thing your insurer will ask for is proof of compliance.
If you cannot provide a current logbook of testing, your claim can be denied.
That means youâre left to cover damages yourself.
Example:
If a faulty hair straightener in a salon catches fire and destroys your shop, your insurer may refuse to pay because you did not meet your legal testing requirements.
If a massage therapistâs heat lamp injures a client, and no tag record exists, liability falls back on you.
Bottom line: Even insurance wonât protect you if you havenât protected yourself first.
If you are a sole trader, you can be sued personally. Your home, car, and family assets may be at risk.
If you operate as a Pty Ltd company, the financial damages could still result in the closure of your business, staff redundancies, and long-term financial strain.
This is not scare tactics â itâs the reality of how the law works.
SafeWork NSW has the power to inspect and issue on-the-spot fines for non-compliance.
Repeated breaches can result in prosecution and public liability exposure.
Faulty kettles, hair dryers, straighteners, extension leads, or power boards can all cause fires, shocks, and burns.
NSW Fire & Rescue regularly warns that overloaded power boards are one of the most common causes of electrical fires in homes and businesses.
A $10 power board plugged into five high-wattage appliances can literally become a ticking time bomb if not checked.
The frequency depends on your business type and how equipment is used:
Offices & low-risk areas: every 12 months
Hair salons, beauty clinics, massage studios, medical clinics: every 6 months (due to heat-based, water-based, and high-use appliances)
Workshops, factories, high-risk areas: every 6 months
Construction & building sites: every 3 months
đĄ Important: If equipment is used daily, moved often, or exposed to water, it may need more frequent testing to remain compliant.
Testing isnât just about placing a sticker on a plug. Businesses are required to maintain a logbook showing:
Date of test
Pass/fail results
Next test due
Appliance details
Without a logbook, you cannot prove compliance â and insurers or SafeWork can treat you as if no testing was done at all.

A Sydney café was forced to close after a fire caused by an overloaded power board destroyed their kitchen. No Test & Tag records = insurance refused.

The Hidden Fire Risk
In 2023, NSW Fire & Rescue reported hundreds of electrical fires caused by everyday appliances like kettles, heaters, and hair dryers. Many of these appliances were old, damaged, or misused â and had never been tested. A simple $5 test could have prevented thousands of dollars in damage, business shutdowns, and in some cases, injury.
The Salon Shutdown
A local hair salon suffered a major setback when a faulty hair straightener sparked a fire during business hours. The salon was closed for months for repairs, insurance refused to cover the damages due to lack of Test & Tag records, and the owner faced lawsuits from both staff and clients who were present at the time.
The Medical Clinic Liability
In a small GP clinic, an old examination lamp caused a minor electrical fire. Luckily, it was put out quickly â but an inspection revealed no Test & Tag had been carried out for two years. The clinic was fined, and their insurer warned them that future claims may not be paid if compliance wasnât maintained.
The Home Business Wake-Up Call
A massage therapist working from home plugged a heated blanket into an old power board. The power board overheated, causing a small fire in the treatment room. While no one was hurt, the business owner discovered too late that their home insurance didnât cover business-related fires â and their liability cover was void due to lack of compliance testing.
The Workshop Accident
A mechanicâs workshop had an untested angle grinder that gave an employee an electric shock. The injured worker lodged a compensation claim, and the business was investigated. Without Test & Tag records, the workshop was fined heavily and their workersâ compensation premiums increased dramatically.
đĄ Every one of these stories has one thing in common: the problem wasnât the appliance â it was the lack of compliance.
đ Regular Test & Tag isnât just about ticking a box â itâs about protecting lives, livelihoods, and your financial future.

Many people think Test & Tag is just âputting a sticker on a plug.â In reality, itâs a formal safety procedure recognised under AS/NZS 3760 standards. Without proper testing, a tag means nothing.
At Romax Test & Tag, we:
Use industry-grade testing equipment
Record results in your compliance logbook
Remind you before your next test is due
Remove and report any failed items to prevent accidents
đĄ Think of Test & Tag as an annual health check for your business appliances. Just like you service your car to keep it roadworthy, appliances need regular testing to keep your workplace safe and legally compliant.
